I think I would be most likely to get into an argument with someone over my rating for these shows because they go against the masses. Personally, it generally seems like I rate one level lower than the norm and one level higher than the norm on shows I like.

I’m perfectly fine with strict ratings. If anything, anime fans are in a media bubble and fail to see good stuff outside their preferences and thus overrate crap. CRAP LIKE EVA of course.
Unless those are the only few series you’ve seen, you might want to provide a larger sample size lest everyone thinks you’re crazed eva fanboy lol.

I rate strickly also. On a 10 scale, I rate 1 to 1.8 points lower than average. I never give 10’s and rare 9’s.
My scores hover around 7 on average beacuse I tend to watch things that are good in general. If I rated everything, I bet my score averages would be around or below 5 which is how I would like it.

As a general rule, I take into consideration did the show do its job by entertaining me? This usually determines if it’ll get a higher or lower score usually.
I only usually give 9’s to shows I really liked and 10’s to shows that I liked but I also believe go beyond just a source of being entertainment. Like stuff by Satoshi Kon for example.

KJoji Oe@ I have watched about 1/4 of the the animes you have (about 50, maybe more)…lol by the way do I see a hint of sarcasm in that last comment? :P
although personally I did not like NGE all that much (although I liked the series a lot better than the movies, which were so boring I couldn’t finish) could you tell me exactly which elements about it made you like it? might help me understand why I did not.
Criteria that I use in critiquing animes:
(1)having a “hook” [to draw me in],
(2) originality/uniqueness,
(3)artwork,
(4)true to the manga/novel/game/etc.
(note that I have yet to find a good anime that was made from scratch. so that’s important too)
(5) has a “universe” (i.e. the CLAMP universe)
(6) “rewatchability”
(7) the usage of cliches (in moderation) I particularly like “rich vs. poor”, “harem”, “love triangle” “shojo/shonen-ai”, “cosplay”, “maho-shojo/shonen”, “otaku”, “sudden girlfriend appearance”, “lolicon” “ecchi”…well mainly those ones..
(8) having a neutral point-of-view, allowing the viewer to decide (or not decide) whether to side with the protagonist(s) or antagonist(s)
(9) the plot (although this is one of the most important, it’s usually not an issue because most animes have no problem with this one- thus it’s at the bottom)

i have a much simpler way exo while watching did your mood change with it did the suspense kick in leaving you on edge of your seat did you laugh and have fun. Though i agree your way is thorough, for me theres too much thinking involved. The reason your rating is off is because you think too much about it and forget to enjoy it.
ps (eva gen) sucked so much didn’t even finish it. My personal favorite would be either inukami, girls bravo, or desert punk.

No offense or anything, but I felt Eva was BAD!!! Too complicated for me and just illogical and full of pointless philosophies. But to each their own I guess, even if its overated like Eva.
