Persona 3: Fes – Move aside anime

Saturday, May 31, 2008 Koji Oe Leave a comment

You might have noticed that I haven’t really been writing lately, and I haven’t been keeping up with things. Although, I’m probably not missing anything of value as always. Just the usual fansubbing drama and bullshit that goes on. Anyway, I haven’t been writing because I have a job and working 37 hours a week so far, and just doing other more worth while things than sit in front of my computer. I’m going camping soon with some friends for the week so I’ll miss out on the next Code Geass R2 episode. :/ Anyway, in my spare time I haven’t really been watching much anime. One thing I’ve been doing is I’ve been playing Persona 3: Fes.

Princess Rouge: Legend of the Last Labyrinth – Yes, another 90s OAV!

Thursday, May 29, 2008 Koji Oe 1 comment

If there is one show I watched with complete indifference it is Princess Rouge: Legend of the Last Labyrinth. What can I say about this show? The characters are flat. There isn’t any significant plot development. There is only two episodes and it just ends like there is going to be more when there isn’t. So, it’s incomplete.

You have this guy who is late for school and a random chick, Rouge, comes flying out of the air into his arms. She doesn’t remember who she is. Well, I’ve seen this plot device a thousand times. Some stuff then happens. Really, this show is uninteresting. This is honestly something you put on when you just want noise in the background but aren’t really paying attention to it. Then Rouge’s two sisters come by and start living with the guy and what not. So, it turns into a sort of weak version of Ah My Goddess.

Although, the relationship between the main guy, Yusuke, and Rouge tries to get somewhere at least unlike the relationship of Keiichi and Belldandy in the beginning. Like Rouge gets angry when Yusuke lies about Rouge’s background, and such. It isn’t really said out right but Rouge probably likes Yusuke.

A lot of the “plot” seems to be said in passing and mentioned briefly. Some points are never explained! Like the one sister shows Rouge a scar which was inflicted on her by Rouge. This is never explained how or why this happened. So, yeah it’s very incomplete.

There are a few fight scenes which are also boring and uninteresting.

There is a pretty huge difference in animation style from episodes 1 to 2. It’s weird. Like Rouge has a dark green hair color and longer hair in episode 1 and then light green and shorter hair in the second. There may have been a pause in time during the development of episode 1 to 2. I dunno, but a lot of the characters look different especially Rouge. Seems like they were trying to go for a more moe design in episode 2. I honestly like the style in episode 1 more.

There isn’t much else to say. I like the song used in the credits. :/ I could have been doing better things with my time which I was. I was actually filling out some of my study abroad stuff while I was watching. It really turned me off after about five minutes. This is a genuine overall bad watch. It’s not that it’s good bad like some of the other OAVs I’ve seen from the 90s so far. It’s bad bad. It could have been better, and maybe it could have been if they had some more episodes to work with, better plot and character development.

Awaited singles released! – Sadly disappointed

Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Koji Oe 5 comments

I’ve been waiting for the singles of the OP to Code Geass R2 and the OP and ED to Zettai Karen Children to be released for a while now. Sadly, the OP to both shows are not really all that good, and the shortened versions are actually more superior.

Code Geass R2 08 – All I have to say

WE ARE ANONYMOUS!!

Otherwise, a pretty talk, talk, talk heavy episode, and it didn’t even seem all that important. Like it was just there to fill the episode. -_-zzzzzzzz

Shit sucks that there is no episode next week. :/

Mahou Tsukai Tai! (OAV) – Isaki apam mehinam eto caffe nam

Saturday, May 24, 2008 Koji Oe 5 comments

Bah, jpmeyer doesn’t know how to rate a show at all. (He even dropped Sketchbook WTF?) He gives Mahou Tsukai Tai a 4/10 and his What I watched this week entry on it doesn’t really make someone want to watch or not watch. Rather, I think he does those entries to keep people away from the said shows but it does Mahou Tsukai Tai such a disservice! This case here is a perfect example of not just listening to one voice or even a review in general. Let me tell you, this show was a fun watch for me.

Definitely one of the better 90s OAVs I’ve seen thus far this summer. Yeah sure it’s really cliche. Sae is the ditz, Nanaka is the tomboy, Aikawa is the bimbo/slut, Takeo is the loser/nerd, and Aburatsubo is the token homosexual, but I think it works and hey it was the late 90s these kinds of characters were pretty common then and now.

I really like the animation and character designs. Produced during that time where things were making that transition from early 90s anime to cute to the moe garbage it is today. There is some fanservice and resulting nosebleeds scattered around usually due to Takeo’s wild imagination which always gave me some good laughs. All three of the main girls are actually pretty cute and likable which is an odd thing because that never happens. I even like Nanaka the tomboy character. I never like the tomboy characters.

Speaking of fanservice, I don’t know what it is about 90s fanservice that is just so much better than fanservice in today’s anime. I honestly find myself cringing when I watch a show and find fanservice in it especially in anime after 2000. Fanservice in anime today just seems so rampant and disgusting. It should just stay out of shows where it really isn’t needed and stick to the shows catered to that kind of garbage like Rosario or whatever.

Mahou Tsukai Tai has a lot of my favorite old school seiyuu like Junko Iwao, Masaya Onosaka, and Takehito Koyasu.

Yeah, there is some kind of plot involving aliens coming on Earth or something, but there really isn’t too much focus on that. To be honest, at the end it’s kinda wrapped up with something like the aliens finding Earth not invadable. Instead, Mahou Tsukai Tai is mostly about the magic club and Sae’s desire to live up to her imagined expectations Takeo has of her magic. Although, Takeo really likes Sae but like all loser characters he can’t really tell her easily. The two of them are such a baka couple, but it’s so cute though.

Eh, Mahou Tsukai Tai isn’t spectacular but I enjoyed this 6 episode OAV. I think it’s more of an 8/10 than a 4/10. That’s so low for a show as fun as this! Least I enjoyed it enough to feel some desire to watch the 13 episode TV series. There are some unanswered loose ends that need answering. Just a pet peeve but why is this called Magic User’s Club in English when the title obviously translates to I want to use magic. I hate when distributors just make up their own stuff. Kinda like the title to Ai ga Tomaranai being changed to A.I Love You and Karen being changed to Chibi Vampire. o_O

I like Zettai Karen Children

The doujinshi are off to a nice start. I’m definitely a fan of the Aoi x Minamoto and Shiho x Minamoto pairings. Keep it up guys.

Tsukuyomi Moonphase – My 4th attempt at watching it

Thursday, May 22, 2008 Koji Oe 4 comments

Yes, this is my fourth attempt at trying to watch Tsukuyomi Moonphase. I know this is like wildarmsheero’s favorite show, but I just can’t take it. I stop almost every time at like episode 3 or 4. Shaft, Gonzo and Bee Train are my least favorite anime studios. Gonzo shows = shit fanservice and shoddy animation and Bee Train = BORING, dark colors, and poor pacing. In the case of Tsukuyomi, it’s a Shaft show. I just can’t take their weird sense of what is humorous because I honestly don’t find it very funny. Their animation is never really a problem it’s just the way they go with the story and the subtle references to weird stuff in the backgrounds or whatever that gets annoying.

Also, every time I start it I seem to lose interest and give up because I have a lot of other (better) shows I’m watching.

Hazuki? Yeah, I’d so raep her.

Aria the Animation – Embarassing remarks aren’t allowed!!

Watching Aria was like an eruption of touched emotions which came out in the form of tears while I watched each episode.

ええええ?

Well, I finally got around to finishing up Aria the Animation. Yeah, I know I’m late. Although, this was pretty much a random watch for me. If it wasn’t for bloggers like Jeff writing about this show still, I’d probably pass it up. An excellent watch that I really enjoyed.

First I must say that I love the opening song, Undine. It’s been raining a lot lately around here and it just seems to really fit the mood. It’s just a soothing song and by the end of the series it really brought a few tears to my eyes. The end song, Rainbow, is alright as well but I haven’t listened to it as much as I have Undine.

My favorite episode would have to be the one that was Aria-shachou centered. THAT episode was pure win because I was a fan of him even before I really got into Aria, which I really started to enjoy at episode 5. Such an amusing and cute cat. I want a cat like Aria-shachou!

I’m a little disappointed that the series was mostly centered around Akari. I know she’s the main character and all but Aika and Alice hardly got any development. I know there are two other seasons… but still. Strangely enough, Alice and I seem to share a lot of the same personality traits and thoughts which was a little interesting to see. Favorite character is definitely Aika even though I think Alice is more cuter but her and I are just way too similar.

Great show with a nice cast. There may not be any fighting, epic quests or anything of the sort but its got a warm message in each laid back episode. It just leaves your heart warmed up like a beautiful summer day. 恥ずかしいセリフ禁止!!

Dear Bryan,

Congratulations! IES is very pleased to inform you that your application to the IES Nagoya program has been reviewed by NanzanUniversity and that you have been accepted to the program! Your official acceptance from NanzanUniversity means that you have been removed from the IES provisional status.

Soon you will receive by mail a packet of admission materials from NanzanUniversity. This packet will be sent to you by Federal Express to your home address and should arrive by the end of this week. You will need to review the materials and return several forms to the IES Chicago office by May 30th, so please be prepared to submit the forms to IES Chicago within a few days of receiving them.

Not sure to really be happy or surprised or both since I practically reduced myself to, “Meh, I’m pretty much going to Japan, but I have no idea where.” But here I am crying so I must feel something deep down. Also kinda surprised because I remember being told that the enrollment for Nanzen in the fall is pretty competitive so I guess I did something right and got in. Now I really gotta study seriously!

Akihabara. Maid cafes. Game, book, anime and doujinshi stores. HERE I COME! HAHA I’M GOING TO JAPAN AND YOU’RE NOT!

I am just being nerdy on purpose and don’t actually feel excited for the things I mentioned above. Regardless, you’ve seen my room. I’m hiding my power level while I’m there. Anime? What’s that? Etc.

Code Geass R2 07 – An embarrassing but needed episode

Sunday, May 18, 2008 Koji Oe 4 comments

To me this episode was a huge embarrassment. No, it didn’t suck or anything of that sort. Just I could not stand watching Lelouch be all emo for the entirety of this episode. It just seemed kinda odd because it’s a side of Lelouch that hasn’t really been seen until up to this point. Up until this point Lelouch has been pretty confident and such when it comes to carrying out his plans. Lately this season seems to have brought nothing but failure for the Order of the Black Knights, and as a fan of Zero and his resistance I’m a little disheartened to see things progressing at a snails pass for them.
