Bah, jpmeyer doesn’t know how to rate a show at all. (He even dropped Sketchbook WTF?) He gives Mahou Tsukai Tai a 4/10 and his What I watched this week entry on it doesn’t really make someone want to watch or not watch. Rather, I think he does those entries to keep people away from the said shows but it does Mahou Tsukai Tai such a disservice! This case here is a perfect example of not just listening to one voice or even a review in general. Let me tell you, this show was a fun watch for me.
Definitely one of the better 90s OAVs I’ve seen thus far this summer. Yeah sure it’s really cliche. Sae is the ditz, Nanaka is the tomboy, Aikawa is the bimbo/slut, Takeo is the loser/nerd, and Aburatsubo is the token homosexual, but I think it works and hey it was the late 90s these kinds of characters were pretty common then and now.
I really like the animation and character designs. Produced during that time where things were making that transition from early 90s anime to cute to the moe garbage it is today. There is some fanservice and resulting nosebleeds scattered around usually due to Takeo’s wild imagination which always gave me some good laughs. All three of the main girls are actually pretty cute and likable which is an odd thing because that never happens. I even like Nanaka the tomboy character. I never like the tomboy characters.
Speaking of fanservice, I don’t know what it is about 90s fanservice that is just so much better than fanservice in today’s anime. I honestly find myself cringing when I watch a show and find fanservice in it especially in anime after 2000. Fanservice in anime today just seems so rampant and disgusting. It should just stay out of shows where it really isn’t needed and stick to the shows catered to that kind of garbage like Rosario or whatever.
Mahou Tsukai Tai has a lot of my favorite old school seiyuu like Junko Iwao, Masaya Onosaka, and Takehito Koyasu.
Yeah, there is some kind of plot involving aliens coming on Earth or something, but there really isn’t too much focus on that. To be honest, at the end it’s kinda wrapped up with something like the aliens finding Earth not invadable. Instead, Mahou Tsukai Tai is mostly about the magic club and Sae’s desire to live up to her imagined expectations Takeo has of her magic. Although, Takeo really likes Sae but like all loser characters he can’t really tell her easily. The two of them are such a baka couple, but it’s so cute though.
Eh, Mahou Tsukai Tai isn’t spectacular but I enjoyed this 6 episode OAV. I think it’s more of an 8/10 than a 4/10. That’s so low for a show as fun as this! Least I enjoyed it enough to feel some desire to watch the 13 episode TV series. There are some unanswered loose ends that need answering. Just a pet peeve but why is this called Magic User’s Club in English when the title obviously translates to I want to use magic. I hate when distributors just make up their own stuff. Kinda like the title to Ai ga Tomaranai being changed to A.I Love You and Karen being changed to Chibi Vampire. o_O
