Ok, don’t get me wrong. I like eroge but only certain kinds. Usually ones that are more on the tame side that are also more romantic than for *fap fap fap* tiem.
Anyway, that isn’t really what I wanna talk about. I’m no connoisseur when it comes to all the better eroge out there because to be honest the only ones I’ve really tried are those released by Augustsoft, Cross Channel and Nanatsuiro Drops which was my most recent try. They’re all pretty enjoyable, but you got to admit they’re all *click click click* than they are anything else. I think I would be more open to playing MORE eroge if they were more engaging and fun.
Now, I know there are some eroge out there that do try to have some kind of gameplay to “spice” stuff up. I’ve played a few (most by GIGA) but honestly it’s so stupid and simplistic. They don’t want you to try very hard at all because eroge, I guess, essentially is for *fap fap fap* tiem. Regardless, the added gameplay isn’t very fun at all because if you still don’t do something right you’re going to miss a flag and get a BAD END. Now, why can’t eroge learn a thing or two from renai/date sims? Now those games are fun.
I find myself playing Tokimeki Memorial 2 over more times than I do Yoake Mae yori Ruri Iro na and within good reason. Once you finish an eroge you know the story and it’s a done deal. There IS no replay value. With renai/date sims, sure I know Kotoko’s story like the back of my hand but there is that added element of more complex gameplay of picking date spots, working on stat points and what not that just makes replay never boring at least in my case.
Even a game like True Love Story which has the simplest gameplay I’ve seen in a renai/date sim has more replay value. You’re given 4 seasons and each season has different events with each girl so that adds more replay value with a given girl than all at once. Then there is True Love Story 2 which is a lot more complex than the first game because some events JUST seem like the stars need to align in a certain way to get an event. Kinda frustrating for a completionist like me who wants all the CGs. So there is replay value in these games because you can’t get everything all at once by just clicking on the right dialogue prompt.
There is no room for experimenting in eroge. You chose the wrong prompt and it’s game over. Even in a game like Comic Party (Dreamcast port), which had the most engaging and fun gameplay in a visual novel I’ve experienced, leaves no room for failure. Oh, you didn’t chose to make an anime related doujinshi as your first doujinshi? Well, you won’t meet Asahi on this playthrough then.
I’m just very frustrated with the very linear and set path eroge is. I want to be more interested in it but I can’t because it’s been the same damn thing. You’d think after all these years they would create something more fun and interesting but they seem to be all the same. At least from my experience. Other genres and series have evolved for the better (and worse) why does eroge refuse to change? Then again, I don’t really experiment since I don’t know what is out there. It is such a lot of work to wait for a game to (you know) and then install it to find it’s not what I’m looking for even though the artwork is appealing.
A lot of my most favorite date games come from the 90s and that seems to be the time when they were at their peek on the console. I’m sure there is a few I am totally aware of that are still out there. Have they been still releasing games with elements like Tokimeki Memorial even today? I haven’t kept up with it. I know there are games like Harvest Moon that still are being made on the console with dating elements and it’s still very fun. Why are the ones without teh pron more fun than the ones with it!?

If you want romance play otome games lol. ( But be careful as the bulk of the 18+ ones have rape. :S)

I personally hate eroge, hentai, yaoi, yuri, everything of that, I have never played an eroge (and probably will never do it) but they are probably made to satisfy the impure needs of people, since people are going to buy an eroge for its adult content not for its gameplay, is rational that eroges are low in gameplay.
As I have read in your blog you have played the Sakura Taisen games, wish I have too, they have a strong replay value and unique gameplay but these games have to be interesting in order to sell (since they lack adult content)
I will never like an eroge will better gameplay since it will lead more impure people to buy these.

No replayability? Of course there is! You have to play it again to see the other paths! I perconally dislike dating sims since they are too complicated. Why would you want to waste time to get that CG by re-playing again and again it if you can get it the first time?

Hypertoast@ But I’m the type that only really likes one girl in an eroge so I never really play the other paths. At least in date sims, there is a more wide range of personalities where some overlap and I end up liking at least 2 or 4 out of maybe 12 girls

I found Fate Stay/Night and Tsukihime (more so the former) to have some good value just for its length… Normally, I can skim through most some games but I had to actively read and engage my mind in a puzzling and long story… The ero content itself was pretty short, seems kinda forced and almost an afterthought to the story… like ‘oh wait, we need ero or we won’t sell, better make something fast.’ I guess however there is no replay value here though as the story progresses extremely linearly and most divergence just leads to a bad end.
I do somewhat wish it could be more challenging and the game play done differently but I don’t know. I guess they like the market where it is, spurring those who play often to buy more to play once they are done with their old ones.
My familiarization with eroge games is pretty limited, as I cannot understand to that level most games… so I am stuck with english titles which, apart from fan translated ones, all kind of suck. =P
I do believe if you just want to sample some games, there are trials for most games where you can play through a small bit and see if you like it, usually offered from the company’s site.

@ Mauru: Totally biased and actually wrong. Some eroge do not rely on erotic content to be good mind you. Like FSN for example.

Well I am sorry for being wrong, is not my fault that I have never play eroge.
Sorry Koji.

The eroge market has something for everyone.
If you want eroge with gameplay then you must play games from companies like Alice Soft, Softhouse Chara or Eushully.
Alice Soft has GREAT games, with nice gameplay and stories. Like the Rance series, featuring the anti-hero Rance in his quest of chasing girls everywhere, that consist in RPGs and two strategy games.
Softhouse chara has mostly strategy games, like Level Justice – a evil organization sim-, Kaizoku – wanna be a Pirate?-, Dragon Nest Maker – You´re a dragon and must build a lair, fight the heroes, attack towns… all those to prove worthy to you future bride (a arrogant dragoness) or maybe you may find the love elsewhere…-, Nangoku Dominion – You and other people are stranded in a desert island and must collect materials, built structures, and eventually find a way to escape-, and lots more.
And Eushully has greats RPG and Strategy Games, like Kuutei Senki, a game about Air Pirates, you can choose from 4 protagonist. And fights card battles in board type scenarys.
And there are more eroge with gameplay out there. I even remember a Fishing Hentai Game. :D
PD:
@ Mauru – I dont get what you mean for impure… sex is impure? I always thinked that is a necesary tool for the survival of the species… and its great too, of course.
And if you think that all eroge are sex-driven, just go and play some of the Key games (Kanon, Air) or grab a english copy of Kana ~Little Sister~ from G-Collections. It´s a BEAUTIFUL and sad story.
And… why Yuri is in the impure category? The tender love betwenn two girls is the purest form of love. Aaaaaaah, the sweet fragance of the lilies. :)

Rincewind@ The evil organization sim and deserted island one sound pretty win. I’ll have to give them all a try though because I’m up for anything if it’s not all *click click click*.
Thanks for the suggestions. If anything else comes to mind don’t hesitate to add them.

Ok, Im glad that you liked my little list. :)
I remember another pair of eroges with gameplay.
One in GUN-KATANA from Black-Cyc. Its a FPS, pretty simple – no different heights, no looking up or down, no jump or crouch, but its pretty fun cut throught hordes of sprited based monsters slicing everything with two katanas. Or destroying everything on sight with two guns.
And its very dark themed, with tentacles, non-consensual, and worse.
Other one is Ijite Princess 3 Final Road from Vitamin. Is a Tactical RPG in the style of FF Tactics, with nice characters, cute graphics, and its pretty fun. I played it yesterday until the thrid battle.
Another good one is the remake of Dragon Knight 4 from ELF. Its the good old game (a Tactical RPG) but in glorious 3D. Was nice in the old DOS era, and now with the 3D adittion, and the revamped graphics is awesome.
Heaven Death Game by Mink is pretty good too. You´re left in an island to participate in a kind of show or something (ah, my bad memory :P) but then you find yourself in a “game” with other people, where the only way to live is killing all others. And for worse, the island is full of half-man half-beast.
You must wander in the island fighting monsters, resolving puzzles, finding clues and finding allies (or killing them… if you prefer) and killing the others before they kill you.
Ah, I almost forgot the Senjyo saga from CYC. (Cousin company from Black CYC). Those are wargames, where you fight missions deploying tanks, helicopters, fighters, artillery, etc in hexagon-based maps.
There are two games. And they are pretty hard, but really good!
And Im still triying to find the hentai fishing game by the way. :D

Rincewind@ I played Nangoku Dominion and Level Justice but despite seeming to be real cool I just don’t know what the hell I’m doing. I’ll have to come back to these when I can read more Kanji.
I did play Sengoku Rance and actually ended up enjoying that pretty much since it ended up not being too hard to understand.

Yes, both are great. But Level Justice is pretty complicated. :P Nangoku, in other side, after a while can be played without reading japanese. I myself escaped from the isle a few times. :D
I would recommend you to play Sudzukuri Dragon (Dragon Nest Maker), its really fun and intuitive. You really dont need to know any japanese to play it.
Dancing Crazies, from Softhouse Chara too, can be played without knowing japanese at all. Its pretty neat, you are a sort of bounty hunter and recruit minions to fight against bands.
And Sengoku Rance is awesome. Be sure to check the Alicesoft Wikia for more information in english about the game.

Rincewind@ Yeah, Sengoku Rance is cool. It’s like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms game with H. Very fun.
What are the other Rance games in comparison?
Friday, May 30, 2008 at 7:37 am |
Well, let me see.
Rance 1-3 are classic RPGs, and by classic I mean very old.
Rance 4 (and 4.1-4.2) are RPGs too, but I havent played them yet.
Rance 5… doesnt exists. :D
Kichikuou Rance is another conquest sim, the precursor of Sengoku Rance. Really good, but harder than Sengoku.
Rance 5D is a sort of Dungeon Crawler/board game mix.
Rance 6 is a RPG, with 1st person perspective.
I loved Kichikuou, but I never finished it. (I must replay it, with the notes of the Wikia at hand :D).
Rance 6 is pretty nice and fun RPG.
Rance 5D, I just play a little. And get too many game overs, I must figure what Im expected to do yet. :D

Try playing Claanad. It has no Eroge at all, and the storylines are still really good. Fate/stay night and Utawaremono is also good too.

Rincewind@ I really want to try all that Rance games eventually! It seems to have an interesting world, setting and characters.
Kloonepoo@ Yeah, I’ve been wanting to try all of those.

Well, even though I dont know a lot of Visual Novels, I found that MOST of them have cliche themes, like a girl goes to wake you up and make breakfast; or that you have a sister *or more* that is no blood-related etcetc so it’s hard to find awesome/original plots =_=* but Key is the company that never ceases to impress me, and they can make great stories without adding H-scenes like in Clannad or Planetarian. Little busters! has now its eroge version *and more complete I’d say* and since it has some games, I think it´ll be of your taste
Hope I have helped you ^^
