Persona 4 OP lyrics – Some thoughts

Saturday, August 2, 2008 Koji Oe Leave a comment Go to comments

We are living our lives.
Abound with so much information.
Come on, let go of the remote.
Don’t you know you’re letting all the junk flood in?
I try to stop the flow, double clicking on the go
But it’s no use; hey, I’m being consumed
Loading… Loading… Loading…
Quickly reaching maximum capacity
Warning… Warning… Warning!
Gonna short-circuit my identity.

Get up on your feet, tear down the walls.
Catch a glimpse of the hollow world.
Snooping ’round will get you nowehere.
You’re locked up in your mind…
We are all trapped in a maze of relationships that goes on with or without you.
I swim in the sea of the unconscious.
I’ll search for your heart, pursuing my true self

I know absolutely nothing about Persona 4 since I’m not really too big on the looking up information thing and what not. So excuse me if this has long been debated. I like to be surprised when I get a game and be like, “Shit this is awesome!” or “Damn this game sucks.” Like I totally hated Persona 3 for being a dungeon crawler (I had no idea it was one when I bought it) but it grew on me after a while. Anyway, judging from the lyrics of the song it looks like Persona 4 might have a lot to do with identity and pop media’s role in forming identity. This gets me kinda giddy because that was one of the things I loved about Paranoia Agent and how Satoshi Kon heavily critiqued the pop media and it’s adverse effects on society. Also, I liked Lain to the extent that Lain, through the Internet, was a completely different person than how she was in reality, and what they did with those ideas.

So, I’m probably more excited than I should be but I hope that Persona 4 touches on these themes or at least something thoughtful since Persona 3 isn’t really doing much for me other than lol shadow killing and date sim gaem. Also, I wish they’d keep the Japanese voices in for 4. It’s bad enough we missed Mamiko Noto playing Fuuka’s voice and got some 40 year old woman who sounds like my grand mom doing her voice. I don’t want to miss out on Rie Kugimiya playing Rise’s voice. ORZ

I don’t know if these would be spoilers for you but…

Persona 4 really has relations with the pop media especially the television. Dungeons are located inside tv’s. A certain tv channel will show your ‘hidden, secret’ identity when you face it at midnight (i’ll give an example *spoiler*: Rise being treated as a sex symbol) and it will reflect your dungeon as well as your Shadow Persona boss (her dungeon is a strip club and the boss is a giant pole dancer)… That’s what happens before you recruit party members, you rescue them first and awaken their personas… It also has more improvements than Persona 3. For me, this would be an interesting game. Lol, sorry for typing too much…

PS – Thanks for the lyrics… I almost thought that the lyrics has a ‘California Potato Power’ part or something XD…

    Can’t wait for this game.
I’m trying my best to avoid any spoilers.
It’s a hard task to do.

kanzeon@ No problem with the long comment. I like long comments when the information is relevant. Yeah, I was aware of the whole TV thing. Sounds cool, but I wonder how it works out? Like in P3 you just can go to Tartarus every night so how does it work in P4?

From what I’ve heard P4 is actually easier than P3. I’m not looking forward to that if it’s true. California Potato Power? I heard of that being in the lyrics but I don’t know how anyone gets that from the lyrics since nothing sounds remotely like that or maybe I’m used to Engrish.

Setsukyie@ Yeah, it’s tempting to just watch videos on YouTube but I haven’t yet. I’m surprised.

You know, you could download the undubbed edition of P3. It’s what I did, saved me a lot of authentic cringe moments.

I think there was a release like that for FES too. It’s really a bad solution, I’ll give you that, it would be much better if they just pulled a Castlevania and released with dual audio.

    See you around.

Colombianon@ Yeah, I heard about that not to long ago. I’d rather support the official release though.

Anyway, judging from the lyrics of the song it looks like Persona 4 might have a lot to do with identity and pop media’s role in forming identity.

Not only with identity, but also with the increasing importance that people are putting on the television as a means of escaping reality. They also tackled some issues that you could connect to the internet. Pretty interesting, actually.

Persona 4 is a lot more interesting that Persona 3, imo. The plot is wonderful, not too predictable. And the characters are much better too. The dungeons in this one aren’t boring and not as long as the ones in Persona 3. In fact, you can finish the dungeons in one go if you’re equipped well (and if you had the patience). I hesitated on playing P4 at first, but it turned out to be much better than I expected. I don’t regret buying it.

K.S@ That’s cool. I honestly can’t wait to try it out when I get back to America. Still need to beat Fes too. Haha…

I got the same feeling as Black Guy when I read the comment on top about Persona 3. But the truth is, that P4 is a far better game. I realized this when I tried to play through P3 a second time (New Game +) and lost interest after the first few battles.
P4 is an improvement in just about every aspect. Even the english dubbing is amazing. The voices are so….real.
