Honestly, you could of had Lelouch and Suzaku having buttsechs and it’d be the same damn episode. Nothing of value was really learned other than I hate Suzaku some more but what’s new? This episode truely encompasses all that I hate about Japanese cartoons. Let’s waste a few episodes on building tension, and having banter between characters that no one will understand yet but will be important later. Come on! It’s episode 17 the plot should be winding down soon, but they only seem to be dragging it along and/or making up new shit for a tweest. All this episode did was to build drama for the next episode, and to give Lelouch BETRAYAL RAGE. Other than that it felt like one of those times someone is talking to you for a very long time and you reply, “That’s nice. So?”
What they should have done was made this episode half the Lelouch and Suzaku buttsechs dialogue and then the second half more involving the infiltration to save Lelouch’s sister. Also did anyone notice how the animation and action in this episode was pretty stale? Most of their budget must have went into episode 16 because that was pretty much the only good episode of R2 thus far, and to a lesser extent 14.

It was mostly setup for the future, yes, which I can usually handle. If you’re going to throw a bunch of twists at the audience, giving them a little build-up is necessary, more often than not. Sometimes Code Geass does that, sometimes it doesn’t. But the way that’s done could certainly be improved, to a greater or lesser extent. Your suggestion for the episode’s second half sounds fair enough, as an alternative, if that means anything by now.
On the subject of animation, off the top of my head, the first few R2 episodes, and others later on, still looked better. By now they might be trying to save their remaining budget for later use, but I assume some animation oddities or shortcuts could be fixed for the DVD release, as is usually the case. Not everything, of course.

Camario@ I’m still trying to figure out what went wrong. Season 1 was so good in many different ways. R2 is just haha let’s do whatever. It has to be the time slot they got for season 2.
