Characters that influenced what I find moe

Listing what series that have defined ones fandom appears to be popular with a lot of other writers lately. Although, I haven’t really seen many talk about their favorite female characters as of late. Actually, I hardly do. Is this just such a nerdy topic that bloggers avoid it or just don’t have an interest in it, I wonder? Maybe I just miss them.

Anyway, I primarily like shy female characters in anime and games, and defining which characters have influenced me in liking such characters really isn’t that hard, but outside those few characters it is rather hard to fully appreciate other characters of that type because I am very picky, and certain features and aspects need to be in play. It is not so easy as saying, “I like all shy female characters.” Some are really more appealing than others, and just being shy isn’t always enough for me. Also, in terms of anime, such characters don’t get as much time to shine as say the tsundere or childhood friend character so in turn it is hard to learn anything about a shy character and start liking them in any type of way. This explains why I went so crazy over Chihiro from Ef because it really has been never that I seen an appealing shy female character get to play a lead role in an anime.

I started to like female characters in anime some time during my third or fourth year as a fan of anime, and since then my criteria has been somewhat harsh. I might like a character but in a rather shallow way. Most of these characters are the ones I buy figures of because, you know, shy female characters are so obsure they hardly get merchandise. My general rule is usually if I can’t hypothetically form something longer than a paragraph about a given character, I probably don’t like them enough. The ones I could write a lot about are the ones I like most. This is where the mai waifu vs. harem kind of lists come into play, I suppose. So, onto which characters have influenced what I find moe presently. There are some kinda H images used so you’ve been warned.

1. Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Moon)

I actually don’t know very much about Hotaru because I have never seen all of Sailor Moon and I have never read any of the manga, but I am aware of who she is and that she is Sailor Saturn. Hotaru has really influenced me in such a way that certain aspects, style, and mannerisms she has I would later look for in other characters. Like the short black hair, pale skin, soft voice, pantyhose, and intellectual yet quite sickly physically. She is really the defining character that caused me to make a shift from liking heroine and more adult figured characters to the more reserved, shy and petite figured female characters.

hanabi
2. Hanabi Kitaoji (Sakura Taisen series)

Hanabi was really the next girl I ended up liking and looks kind of like an older Hotaru. Hanabi essentially is the trademark shy girl of the Sakura Taisen franchise. Maybe it’s because I’m a foreigner and falling into that trap of liking the typical submissive Asian woman, but I can’t help it. She’s Japanese, has short black hair, shy, and very feminine. Hanabi’s gestures in game are really shy. Putting her hands to her face and blushing. Sighing when embarrassed, and just that overall silent but understanding tone. Though, the silence and somewhat angry face she give you when you make a bad choice is just as killer in a bad way.

I like her story in Sakura Taisen 3 because she was originally going to get married but her fiance died in a boating accident. The male lead, Oogami, helps Hanabi overcome her past and realize that nationality and gender are constructed concepts, causing her to reject her Orientalist concept of gender and learn to define femininity for herself. Nothing like being the knight figure helping the girl out.

3. Mio Kisaragi (Tokimeki Memorial)

Playing Tokimeki Memorial as a rom for the SNES during the first few months I had a computer was a rather short period of time since despite being an interesting game it is hardly anything worth replying maybe more than twice. Anyway, a girl like Mio is the kind of girl I really wanted to encounter during my four years of high school. Intelligent, shy, a romantist, weak physically, and very feminine. Also, Mio is probably the first character that really gave me that good old glasses fetish that I really want all my shy intelligent girls to wear now.

asahi

4. Asahi Sakurai (Comic Party)

Asahi is more of a mix of the three previous characters but maybe more pointing towards moeblob? Asahi is an extremely shy character, and even stutters while she speaks because she is really shy when she isn’t doing the voice of other characters since she is an anime voice actor. She also wears glasses from time to time. I liked her story fairly much and I think might have been in some way inspired by one of Leaf’s earlier games called White Album, where the lead male is the boyfriend of a pop idol, except maybe less sad.

5. Mia Clementis (Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na)

I honestly don’t know anything about Mia’s back story or in depth inner character which really burns her down to two things on this list 1. Very cute and 2. Moeblob. Her personality kind of also reminds me a little bit of Asahi and mostly Shinobu from Love Hina. Short blue hair, rather shy and a little clumsy and likes to do housework. It’s a tough call to know how old Mia is. She might be a little younger than Feena but she’s definitely drawn to be one of those loli looking characters who isn’t really.

The fact that she is a maid is pretty cute. I think she is the only maid character that I really like and partly because of her outfit, and how the H scenes incorporate her outfit. In most H games, they’re so quick to strip the girl naked but not here. Mia seems like a very loyal girl since she’s rather dedicated.

shy-girls

The others who are really just rehashes or older versions of the top five but still like fairly much but haven’t really influenced much. Some how I think there were more though at one point, but I hardly really find shy girls I like a whole lot of the time. I am sure you can spot the common trends among them all too.

So, what about you? What characters have influenced the characters you like today?
